Geometric Designs Studio

Monroe, Connecticut

(Return to Home Page of Geometric Designs)

I remember helping my grandmother prepare carpet rags when I was in elementary school. Everyone's old clothing, worn out household linens, and any other worn textiles were painstakingly taken apart and torn into strips, then sewn together in a random pattern to make large balls of weft materials. Every piece was used - all the buttons and zippers were saved for further use. When there were enough rags sewn to make several rugs they were taken to a local weaver. Through imaginative use of color and line in the warp threads, all of our rags were turned into lovely, useful rugs.

My designs are based on this traditional style of rug weaving, but I have color selections that my grandmother never had. I use a combination of worn clothing, mill remnants, and cutting room scraps to create colorful, functional rugs and runners. One of my favorite activities is combing thrift shops, rummage sales, and discount fabric shops for new and interesting colors.

My studio is open by appointment (203-268-5511). We are always happy to demonstrate how our products are made.
